LinkedIn Ad Library (linkedin.com/ad-library) - shows all active LinkedIn ads for any company. Useful for B2B positioning and ICP targeting signals.

What to Track
Understanding where competitor traffic comes from tells you which channels are working for them in your market - and which ones you're underinvesting in.
Key questions:
- What's their primary acquisition channel (organic, paid, direct, referral, social)?
- Is their organic traffic growing or declining?
- Which keywords are driving the most traffic?
- Are they investing heavily in paid search?

Ahrefs Site Explorer - best for organic traffic and keyword-level breakdown. More accurate than Similarweb for SEO-specific data.
Semrush Traffic Analytics - similar to Similarweb with good channel breakdown.
Important caveat: all third-party traffic estimates are estimates. They're more reliable for directional signals (is organic growing?) than for precise numbers. Don't present them as exact figures.
How to Use Traffic Data
The most useful signal isn't the absolute number - it's the trend and the channel mix.
A competitor with 80% organic traffic and growing is investing in SEO as their primary channel. One with 60% paid traffic is dependent on ad spend. One with 40% direct is building brand.
If a competitor's organic traffic is growing fast, check what keywords are driving it. If they're ranking for keywords you've ignored, that's a content opportunity.
4. Backlink Analysis
What to Track
Backlinks drive domain authority, which drives organic rankings. Understanding your competitors' backlink profile tells you:
- Which sites in your industry link to them but not to you (outreach targets)
- What types of content earn links in your category (content strategy signal)
- How their domain authority compares to yours
Running a Backlink Gap Analysis
- Export your top competitors' referring domains from Ahrefs or Semrush
- Cross-reference against your own referring domains
- The gap - sites linking to them but not you - is your outreach list
Filter the gap list by domain authority. Focus on DR 40+ sites first. Look at the page that earned the link - what type of content was it? If competitors are earning links with original research, data reports, or detailed guides, that's what the category rewards.
What Types of Content Earn Links
Backlink data is one of the best signals for content strategy. Look at the top linked pages for each competitor:
- Data and research posts - original studies, surveys, industry benchmarks
- Free tools - calculators, generators, checkers
- Comprehensive guides - definitive resources on a topic
- Controversial or contrarian takes - posts that get shared and debated
If all your competitors' most-linked content is original research, your content strategy should include at least one data-driven piece per quarter.
5. Messaging and Positioning Analysis
What to Track
Messaging changes more slowly than ads but matters more for positioning. What problem does each competitor lead with? Who do they say they're for? What's their main differentiation claim?
Track:
- Homepage headline and subheadline (what's the core value proposition?)
- Who they explicitly target (job title, company size, industry in their copy)
- How they position against the category
- Pricing page framing (value vs. cost savings vs. ROI)
- Customer proof points (case study themes, logos, metrics cited)
How to Analyze It
Do a quarterly audit of each competitor's homepage, pricing page, and top 3 landing pages. Log the core message for each. Over time, you'll see when they reposition - usually in response to market feedback or a new ICP.
